Dr. Churchill's initial laboratory based research concerned the cellular immunology of tumor antigens using a guinea pig hepatoma model and then studies of the effects of cytokines activated human macrophages on tumor cells. After assuming responsibility for the blood bank in 1977, his research was focused on clinical studies of issues related to the blood bank such as the effect of irradiation on red cells, thawing of plasma by microwave, and Cytomegalovirus (CMV) testing. Since 1986, his research has been primarily concerned with studies of outcomes of transfusion practice among a cohort of five major university hospitals, as well as studies of national trends in blood use.
